I absolutely love the Lunchbox. It's a fun project and it has plenty of power. There's a bunch of great aftermarket parts for these rc trucks and cars. I highly recommend Tamiya products to anyone who wants a good quality hobby grade rc.

It's something that I was looking for. It's perfect, if you're interested in 1/14 RC Scale Semi-Trucks. NOTE: This is just the truck itself. There's no radio transmitter, receiver, sound, lights, servos or batteries with this truck. All that is sold separately. However it is a great build.

Michael F.

a very well made item as this is not a toy. use the video's on u tube to help. that was the only way to figure parts of this build.

tybud

This is the fun est build I have ever done and the truck ends up soooooooo sick when your done!!!

Building this brought back great memories as a kid. Not sure why some folks gave it bad reviews. I'm assuming they assumed it was a ready-to-run pre-assembled model. This needs fully built and painted. Mine did come with a Tamiya ESC that is brushless/brushed capable. That was a pleasant surprise.

Bob T

I was driving my 1970 VW bug in 1979 when this model was first released. I love the scale suspension detail.

R Harris

Good price wanted it of and on for awhile glad I finally got one, very happy with the purchase.

This kit was awesome to build and was very fun to drive. Im also surprised that the kit came with ball bearing a sport tuned motor (better than silver can motor) and an aluminum heat sink. Adding on one thing. The spare parts just for the body cant be bought separately since they were discontinued, but if you break something on the chassis then it can be replaced or upgraded to aluminum.

Giulio

paulo

Bought this RC kit for my 12 year old son. Was a great father/son project. The Phillip screws are not too friendly, so we swapped them all out.
Don’t forget to buy a steering servo, transmitter with receiver, battery and charger.

Karen Anaya

Tamiya is one of the best brands RC cars I know for years. This built was no exception to the quality it brings.

WaveRider

I really enjoy the detail of the RC body. It will be fun to paint. The fact it comes with the chrome fixtures is also a nice touch by Tamiya. This kit is a nice addition to my collection.

Tamiya is known for it's easy assembly and quality products. The Hornet is a classic for those who are into older RC cars, it's been around since the 80's. Great for a child or someone who is new to RC and wants a basic car to learn how everything works together in the RC cars.

Be aware this is just for the car and motor. You will need:
1 Steering Servo - this controls the direction in which the car turns.
1 Electronic Speed Controller - this connected to the battery delivers power to car to make it run
1 Radio and Receiver - This is the hand held remote that you use to control the car and the receiver is what receives the signal from the remote.
1 or more Batteries -the power source for the car, depending on the type of plugs you use coming from the Electron Speed Control. Make sure the Electronic Speed Control can mate up to the battery properly and it can handle the power of the battery.

If you're new to the hobby consult a local hobby shop to ensure you get the proper setup that is appropriate for the car.

You'll also need some paint to paint the body as it's clear Lexan. ( wash the body with soap and water, let it dry and paint on the inside of the body to protect the paint from scratches )

A classic buggy that is fun to drive and is enjoyable to build. If you aren't sure consult a local hobby shop and learn about different brands and what they offer to see what suits your needs.

A.C.E. Rider

I'll give the Hornet 5 stars just for nostalgia. If you know what this buggy is, build it just to bring back memories.

The car has some minor suspension changes that can be done during the build, and if you're NOT going to run solely on pavement then set it to soft. The 540 has enough power just to keep this car bouncing nonstop even on a gravel road if you have the spring spacers in.

Also the box says very specifically that an ESC is NOT included, so beware of that. The Hobby Wing ESC that's commonly purchased on Amazon with these cars works fine, but beware that locating the power switch where the Tamiya instructions want it is not going to happen without modification to the ESC.

This is not a problem in my opinion, as I just mounted on side of the ESC so I could flip the power through the front window area. Get creative when using a non Tamiya ESC.

This is a great re-release of a classic Tamiya buggy design. I like that my eight year old kids were able to build the exact same kit that I built when I was their age. Quality of the parts are as good or better than the original. Having kids learn on a kit buggy that is rear wheel drive is SUPER beneficial to their driving skills. Because they built it from a base tub kit, they understand how it works and how to fix it when things go wrong. Also taught them about gearing, the importance of lubrication, damping oil, how NOT to overtighten a set screw (had to do one fill and drill, but they understood after that...). The RTR 4x4 buggies are fine (they also have a Volcano), but do not teach much about torque and drift control, etc. This buggy makes you WORK when you drive it. Just making it go in a straight line is a challenge... 😎

Keep in mind that this kit does not come with ANY electronics except for the brushed 460 standard drive motor. But, again, as compared to the RTR kits, this allows you to talk with your kids about the importance of a high quality transmitter, sealed servo's, etc. The point of these kits it they are pretty inexpensive, with good fun factor and great to learn with and get the RC bug.

  • Highly accurate static display model.

Neon Orange

This is my second Tamiya kit build, and it sure was a ton of fun. The instructions were perfectly clear and easy to follow - just take note of which body configuration the car uses! I used a highlighter to mark parts of the build that were specific to the Beetle's frame size so that I wouldn't mess up as I went along.

I loved the look of the beetle on the box, so I decided to do all of the painting and decals 100% by the book using Tamiya polycarbonate paints. The black hood with the matte finish is exceptional looking, as are the "chrome" plastic bumpers and mirrors. I like the look of the long antenna, and for better visibility I added a little construction flag.

The provided motor is pretty ordinary and doesn't have a ton of power, but I'm not generally going 100% speed off road so this is not really a big deal for me. I also find that it has a satisfyingly "authentic" high pitched sound, not unlike a real vintage Beetle. It's fun on the road, but the real joy is cruising around on gravel or on a grassy beach like in my attached photo. This car doesn't have a ton of lift, so it's relatively easy to high-center on rocky terrain. This just adds to the challenge! It is a 4wd vehicle and comes with grippy tires, and it performs markedly better than my 2wd rear-wheel Tamiya Subaru Brat on slick surfaces. After a long day of playing, I will tune the car up by tightening anything loose, shaking dirt and rocks out of the chassis, and washing the body gently with water. I use a dry paintbrush and canned air to loosen stubborn dirt in the chassis. With care, I have no doubt this car will last a long time.

My kit did come with an ESC, but if this is your first build you will need tools, batteries, and RC radio/receiver. If you've been wanting to build a hobby RC kit, this would be a great pick.

Andrew Fuller

super fast car steering kindof sucks i think its because of the suspension. if you make a sharp turn to the right and try to straighten, it pulls to the right until you turn the other direction hard then it seems to want to go the other way.

Devin Ames

When you look this kit up it shows to comes with a torque tuned motor and esc. mine that i just received only had the basic 27t silver can and no esc. other than that its a great kit and i am pleased. sadly i am having to wait to build it as i had to order more parts i was not expecting.

This kit has alot of potential a few hop op parts and I got it going 50+ mph it's holding up nicely. If you're willing to spend about 300$ more this car can hang with the best.

1986 was the year Tamiya became really popular with the release of iconic RCs like the monster Beetle. As a child from a lower middle class home all my father could afford was the Grasshopper which was Tamiya’s remedy for people who wanted to experience the joy of building, rebuilding and running these things literally until the wheels fell off. All I could do was drool at the sight of my friends who owned all the best. Tamiya did a great thing by re releasing these ever loved products so the ones who couldn’t afford them in 1986 could get a second chance at capturing the Nostalgia that comes with just opening the box. 5 stars for the nostalgia factor. Things I didn’t like was Tamiya did not use blister packs to showcase the parts in the box like they did in the 80’s or did they use the original decals with authentic racing sponsers instead using generic ones. However that being said I took the challenge and am piecing together parts to make a period accurate piece from the net. So I am having twice as much fun! That being said, the suspension lacks the movement and durability the newer ones today offer so be ready to modify to suit to your preference. Still after 30 years this kit is a blast to build and will last for years to come. Even though it lacks the technology the newer cars have you can still modify it to blow anything away. I bought myself and each of my boys a kit to introduce them into this wonderful hobby. Highly recommended!! Thanks Tamiya and Amazon!!

Tamiya plastics model Co. Japan has re-released some of there radio control buggy & truck kits from the 1980s and the Monster beetle is one of those re-released kits. These kits include a nice electronic speed control , you will need a 2ch radio with one servo for steeringa battery and charger & paint if you want to paint the body (you can put decals directly on plastic)
These kits are a lot of fun to build and the quality is excellent. The build manual has great diagrams and easy to understand directions. A high quality JIS (Japanese industrial standard) Phillips head screwdriver is recomended but a regular Phillips head of good quality will work.
You build the shocks , suspension , frame screw all those part together, install radio gear , put tires on the rims , ....a lot of fun, great for a kid that is 14/15 with some mechanical inclination or a father / some project.
Google tamiya 1/10 scale r/c vehicles and see what other cool kits they offer.

Matt

Great to build..brought back many child hood memories!

You will love this kit for the price! Not hard to build and paint just take your time. Fast car too, motor is tuned 540 for max torque. Used 2 cans of tamiya blue 16 and 1 can of the smoke. Apply 4-5 light coats and allow about 5 mins. dry time between coats.

Playtime

Bought this for my 6yo so we could continue our RC journey together! Now we both have drift cars and so the fun continues. Take your time building the kit and if you like to do hop-ups also known as upgrades also known as bank account killer it’s always dood to do them up front unless you like to replace things as they break. Bearings are a must and anything drivetrain related if you plan on running a brushless set-up.

R2d2

I love this kit. My first tamiya. It's coming together nicely

What to Consider for tamiya rc cars

Here are the key considerations

Features You are Looking for

The product should have the features you are looking for. All the reputed marketplaces and online shops write product descriptions, read them, assess them according to your need. If you are not happy with what they wrote on there, ask them.

You know what? Ifs better to regrate before than after purchasing a product online. Returning products is a hassle.

While checking the product features, compare its pros and cons. Here in our list, we picked the {replaceKey} features from Amazon, to make a quick look. Hope that helps.

Users Feedback and Brand Recognition

Certainly, a product is available on the market for a while, the brand hit some sales and obviously, there is a customer base. If you make a few google searches and read some user feedback you will get a nice idea about that product and brand value and recognition.

The good thing is here we have compiled some good feedback from real users, I mean verified product owners.

There are a few tricks to understand a brand value and recognition like how loyal the customers are, how much visible the brand is? What is their customer support like?

Support and warranty

Sometimes the product you purchase needs customer support and that’s important. So it’s better to check their official website and support system. How faster their response is and how helpful they are.

So support depends on your product type and services. You should define the product and how consistent customer support you will be needing or not.

Product Price

Product price plays an important role in purchase decisions. Yes, some products provide real value for the money, but it does not mean high price product is always good. But you know money talks and a product with better price, chances are the product is good.
